Hole in the Roof Church
Detroit, MI

Last year for Christmas I gave signed copies of Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom to some family members. Mitch is a Detroit local, newspaper columnist, and author (perhaps most notably of Tuesdays with Morrie). He doesn't normally travel around signing books, but he does do a few local appearances up here.

Anyway, the book was a hit with family. Around Adam's birthday last June, we had a "day of fun" in Detroit at the farmer's market, the museum, the OMNI theater, and sight-seeing. We decided to find the church that Mitch wrote about in Have a Little Faith.
The ministry of the church is called "I Am My Brother's Keeper." This church serves primarily the homeless in downtown and it's in the worst part of Detroit. It had a rotten roof with a gaping hole (literally), so the members set up a tent inside the church for worship services, which were held rain or shine, cold or heat. Mitch started a charity to help repair the roof, and half of his book was about this church and ministry. The roof was repaired, one $12 shingle at a time.

Great story of Detroiters helping each other out and how the faith of a small group of people made big things happen.

Adam has been bugging me to post these for a while now. See, babe? I told you I'd get to them eventually. :)
